The Religious Society of Friends

friends meeting house

As Friends Meeting of Washington, we pray that this lengthy conflict be ended quickly in a way that promotes equality, safety, and justice for all. We are called to act in faith and love, with persistence, patience, and courage, as partners and hands of the divine spirit as we pursue the sacred goal of peace, shalom, salaam. A Meeting for Reflection and Worship for People of Color is held monthly.

As a sober woman committed to helping other women, I am proud to be a member of the Board of Directors at Friendly House. Having personally experienced the devastation of addiction, I am dedicated to ensuring that other women have access to the support and resources they need by using my voice and influence to make a difference in the lives of those seeking recovery. Being part of this special community is my way of giving back and making sure that no one has to face the challenges of addiction alone. In 2013 Christina started working in treatment as a detox technician. Over the last decade she has held a variety of jobs, learning every aspect of the treatment industry from HR/compliance, management, admissions, marketing/business development to operations. Morgan’s legal career and personal time have been marked by volunteering for, being of service to, and working with various legal, non profit and governmental organizations.

When she’s not volunteering, Heather enjoys cooking, painting, and going to the beach. As a practicing attorney, Ms. Mallory worked as a volunteer prosecutor for the Los Angeles City Attorney’s Office, and was a Staff Attorney for Los Angeles Dependency Lawyers where she represented indigent parents in Juvenile Dependency matters. She was responsible for defending parents charged with abuse and neglect where many of the charges involved serious allegations including infanticide. Ms. Mallory then went on to join the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office. She has prosecuted misdemeanor and serious felony matters that include rape, other sex crimes, child abuse, human trafficking, domestic violence, child and elder abuse, child and elder sexual abuse, and gang related violent crimes and murder cases.

I found a renewed sense of purpose and hope the more involved I became with women who were desperately seeking sobriety, as well as, a new way of living. His beliefs spread to the colonies, and eventually to Newport aboard the ship Woodhouse, which arrived with a group of English Friends in 1657. The simplicity of Fox’s message appealed to many of Newport’s early settlers, who flocked to the Society in the 17th century. Newport’s philosophy of toleration provided a safe haven for early Quakers and here they flourished and grew. Instead, they practiced "silent waiting," or worshipping in silence as they sat on the rows of long wooden benches. In 1827, the Great Separation divided Pennsylvania Quakers into two branches, Orthodox and Hicksite. Many individual meetings also separated, but one branch generally kept possession of the meeting house.

In March of 1951, Friendly House was born

During the restoration of the property, archaeological surveys revealed a large and complex Native American site beneath the northern half of the Meeting House. This and subsequent excavations in the 1990s uncovered lithics, shell pits, and animal remains, all of which point to the long-term use and occupation of the site by Indigenous peoples prior to its development by Newport’s Quaker community in the late 17th century. Numerous Friends meeting houses are individually notable, either for their congregations or events or for architecture of their historic buildings. Some in the United Kingdom are registered as listed buildings, and in the United States are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The various world regions of Friends World Committee for Consultation list contact information for the yearly meetings in different parts of the world. Yearly meetings are regional affiliations of monthly meetings or churches.

Then, in what’s known as an unprogrammed meeting, everyone sits in silence, usually for an hour, and waits to see if a message comes. Anyone could be the instrument through which God (or Spirit, if you prefer) chooses to give a message that day. Most Quaker communities, though, are likely to come together for worship at a meetinghouse. There are a number of differences between a meetinghouse and a church, but perhaps one of the most meaningful is that a meetinghouse does not have an altar. In older meetinghouses, you might see the benches at one end of the room raised slightly, because that was where the meeting’s elders sat, but today everyone usually sits on the same level, with no Friend placed above another, and face each other in a square or a circle. Perceived as a radical threat to the stability of New England society, they were whipped, driven from other colonies, and sometimes, like Mary Dyer, the well-known Newport Quaker, executed for their beliefs.

After the departure of the New England Yearly Meeting of Friends in 1905, the building was used as a recreation center. It became an important meeting place for the African-American community and it was here that the Martin Luther King Center, a social service agency now located nearby, was founded. In the 1970s, the meeting house was restored under the guidance of architect Orin M. Bullock, and was presented to the Newport Historical Society by its owner, Mrs. Sydney L. Wright.

Heather’s work includes starting a mental health team for Children’s Law Center and running a crisis and mental health program at her church, Bel Air Church (formely Bel Air Presbyterian Church). Heather earned her Juris Doctorate from The George Washington University Law School and her Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from California State University, Long Beach. Morgan J. Mallory, Esq., President of the Board of Directors for Friendly House, was invited to join the Board in 2010 by one of her personal heroes, the late Peggy Albrecht.

Plain are the windows and shutters; the floor is of unvarnished wood. You may have noticed the term “unprogrammed meeting” above, which implies the existence of programmed meetings. In a programmed meeting, one or more members of the Friends community may serve in a pastoral role by leading everyone in song or prayer or sharing a reading from Scripture. At least once a week, the members of that meeting will gather for worship. The exact form of worship can vary, depending on the community’s spiritual orientation, as we’ll see in a bit, but silent worship is a core element of just about any Quaker meeting.

These Friends disrupted Puritan services and were often perceived as witches. Fox and his followers eventually learned to temper their actions, and in the 18th and 19th centuries, Friends became known more for pacifism, close-knit communities, and skill in business matters. The Society of Friends was formed in the 1640s, when religious dissident George Fox began to preach the concept of the “inner light” throughout England.

Emily had her own struggle with addiction and began working in treatment in 2013 at Beit T’Shuvah where she helped develop their Extended Care Program. She spent two years working for The People Concern with the unhoused population. Her service work connected clients to social services programs, and provided education on harm reduction and medication assisted treatment (MAT). Influenced by Rika’s philanthropic passion towards women’s recovery, Martin was inspired to follow suit. Martin’s own family has battled addiction, some recovered, while others are still active and hopes to her sales, HR and business development acumen contributes to Friendly House’s mission and growth for another 70 years.
